Title: Grammar Goofs
Target Structure: Error Correction
Level: Advanced
Time: 30 minutes

Description:

How good are your students at advanced error correction?

This worksheet looks at grammar mistakes which are commonly made by native speakers. There are twenty-four different sentences. Can your class find the errors?

The lesson works well with a follow-up discussion. Some of the 'errors' in the sentences may well be controversial. Should we really care about split infinitive? How does English grammar compare to your students' mother tongue? Is the grammar strict in their language? Do people regularly break the rules?

This lesson is designed for advanced-level classes.

Title: Checking a Hotel Reservation
Target Structure: Phone English / Requests
Level: Elementary
Time: 45 minutes

Description:

This conversation-based worksheet will help your students with basic telephone English and using 'could' for requests.

There is a lead-in on the topic of hotels, with simple questions. Your students will then need to put a conversation in order. The conversation strips are provided along with teaching notes.

There is a short grammar quiz, followed by lots of practice of the target language.

By the end of the lesson, your students will be able to ask and answer basic telephone questions, and check a reservation at a hotel.

This worksheet is written for elementary-level students.

Title: Picture Level Check
Target Structure: Level Check (Low Level)
Level: Elementary - Pre-Intermediate
Time: 15 minutes

Description:

This picture can be used to establish the abilities of lower-level students. It can be used on its own, or together with our fuller level check.

The picture comes with a set of suggested questions. You can simply ask the student to make as many sentences as possible about the picture, and/or ask some yourself.

This picture can be used to check:

* there is / there are
* pronouns
* to be
* have / have got
* clothing (including plurals)
* present simple
* present continuous
* countable and uncountable nouns
* time
* weather
* basic prepositions

Title: Level Check for Spoken English
Target Structure: Various
Level: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced
Time: 10-20 minutes

Description:

This level check is a great way to check your students' spoken English ability.

This level check has around one hundred questions ranging from elementary level structures such as to be / there is, as well as tenses, passives, conditionals, adjectives, phrasal verbs, used to, and higher level structures. (recommend, insist, despite, cleft sentences etc.)

The questions gradually become more difficult. It's not necessary to ask them all; you can stop when the student is struggling.

If you have lower-level students, you could use the picture level check instead.

After conducting this level check, you'll have an excellent idea of your students' strengths and weaknesses in English.
