This worksheet looks at grammar mistakes which are commonly made by native speakers. There are twenty-four different sentences. Can your class find the errors? The lesson works well with a follow-up discussion. Some of the 'errors' in the sentences may well be controversial. Should we really care about split infinitive? How does English grammar compare to your students' mother tongue? Is the grammar strict in their language? Do people regularly break the rules? This lesson is designed for advanced-level classes.

This level check has around one hundred questions ranging from elementary level structures such as to be / there is, as well as tenses, passives, conditionals, adjectives, phrasal verbs, used to, and higher level structures. (recommend, insist, despite, cleft sentences etc.) The questions gradually become more difficult. It's not necessary to ask them all; you can stop when the student is struggling. If you have lower-level students, you could use the picture level check instead. After conducting this level check, you'll have an excellent idea of your students' strengths and weaknesses in English.
